Catherine E. "Kitty" Byron

Catherine E. “Kitty” Byron, aged 77 of Faribault, MN passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN following an extended illness.

 

Kitty, the daughter of John and Angela Mastalski, was born on September 24, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY.  Kitty grew up in a military family and they lived in Norfolk, VA for most of her schooling years but she spent her final year of high school in Newport, RI.  Following high school she attended Salve Regina College and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.  It was during her college years that she met her future husband, Joseph Byron who was stationed in Newport attending U.S. Navy OCS.  They were united in marriage on June 24, 1967 in Newport and later moved back to Minnesota.  In 1969 Kitty began her teaching career with the Mankato School District and taught there until 1974.  In 1982 she began a 30 year career teaching math at the Faribault Middle School until her retirement in 2012.  Kitty enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, playing scrabble and reading.  She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter Pi in Faribault and Northfield.

 

Kitty is survived by her husband, Joe Byron of Faribault, MN; by five children, Betsy (Walter) Ritschel of Apple Valley, MN, Mary Byron of Bloomington, MN, Joe (Brissa) Byron of Lakeville, MN, Jane Byron of Bloomington, MN and Tony (April) Byron of Frederic, WI; by eight grandchildren; by her siblings, Michael (Joanne) Mastalski of Roseville, CA, Elizabeth (James) Walker of Anacortes, WA, John Mastalski of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Anthony (Susan) Mastalski of Fredericksburg, VA and Stephanie (Peter) Medeiros of Middletown, RI and by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

 

Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, John and Angela Mastalski.

 

Private family services will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023.  Interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

 

The family prefers that any memorials be directed to Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter Pi in memory of Kitty.
