Kathleen D. "Kathy" Phyle

Kathleen Diane Phyle, “Kathy”, age 82, passed away on August 30, 2026, in Apple Valley, Minnesota. She was born on September 28, 1943, in Evansville, Indiana.

Kathy was a truly special person whose life was defined by one simple but powerful purpose: caring for others. Whether she was raising her children, loving and caring for her grandchildren, or tending to her patients, being a caregiver was not simply something Kathy did—it was who she was.

Kathy dedicated 35 years of her life to the nursing profession, serving as both an LPN and RN. Throughout her career, she cared for patients at the Minnesota State Hospital, the University of Minnesota, Abbott Hospital, Regions Hospital, and finally Woodwinds Hospital, where she retired in 2009.

Nursing was far more than a profession to Kathy; it was a calling. She poured her heart into caring for her patients, and few approached that responsibility with the passion, compassion, and empathy that Kathy demonstrated throughout her career. For countless patients and families, she was a source of comfort during moments when kindness and reassurance were needed most. Her 35 years of nursing represent a remarkable legacy of service to others.

But of all the people Kathy cared for throughout her life, none meant more to her than her family.

Kathy is survived by her three children, Kelli Ramey, John Phyle, and Matt Phyle, and her eight beloved grandchildren: Zach Phyle, Madeline Linder, Dan Phyle, Chris Ramey, Savanah Phyle, Shiane Phyle, Ashley Jenstad, and Spencer Jensted. Being a mother and grandmother brought Kathy tremendous joy and purpose. The same qualities that made her an exceptional nurse—her compassion, empathy, strength, patience, and instinct to care for others—were at the heart of the mother and grandmother she was. She gave generously of herself and loved her family deeply.

Kathy will be laid to rest in Minneapolis on September 28, 2026, the day that would have been her 83rd birthday. A memorial service celebrating Kathy’s life will precede her interment. In a fitting tribute to a woman who devoted so much of her life to nursing and caring for others, Kathy will be honored by the Minnesota Nurse Honor Guard before her ashes are laid to rest.

Kathy leaves behind far more than memories. She leaves a legacy of compassion, service, and unconditional love. Her life can be measured in the countless people she cared for, the patients she comforted, the family she nurtured, and the love she gave so freely.

For 82 years, Kathy made the lives of others better simply by caring for them. And while she will be deeply missed, the compassion and love she gave throughout her lifetime will live on through her children, her grandchildren, and the many lives she touched.

A nurse by profession, a caregiver by nature, and a mother and grandmother with all her heart—Kathy spent her life taking care of others. It was not simply what she did. It was who she was.
