Marilyn J. Bongers

February 17, 1952 — June 18, 2025

Owatonna, MN

Marilyn J. Bongers, age 73 of Owatonna, MN formerly of Faribault, MN, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at her home.

Marilyn Jean, the daughter of John and Carmel (Joachim) Miller, was born on February 17, 1952 in Faribault, MN. Marilyn grew up in Faribault and graduated from Faribault High School with the Class of 1970. She continued her education at Mankato State University, earning a degree in Education. During her time there, she married the love of her life, Dan Bongers, on July 7, 1973, at First English Lutheran Church in Faribault. Marilyn dedicated 43 years to teaching in both the Steele County and Rice County School Districts. Her commitment to education was unwavering, as she taught elementary and special education students while also mentoring fellow educators. Ever passionate about learning, she pursued and earned her master's degree in education administration. Marilyn was known for her generosity and kindness, sharing both her time and talents freely with others.

Marilyn cherished her summers at the lake, where she and Dan spent countless hours outdoors, often out on the boat fishing together. Those peaceful moments by the water were some of her favorites. She also found immense joy in being with her daughters and grandchildren. To her grandchildren, Marilyn was much more than a grandmother; she was their biggest cheerleader, encouraging them every step of the way. They’ll always remember her for her delicious homemade brownies and chocolate chip cookies, fun card games, reading countless books, and the laughter-filled days. Above all, they’ll carry with them the joyful, carefree spirit she shared—her contagious laugh and ability to make every moment feel like an adventure and special.

Marilyn was a bit of a wild spirit, never short on humor or energy. She had a natural gift for entertaining, and her motto was always "the more, the merrier." Whether hosting gatherings or just enjoying quiet moments, she loved having people around. She also found peace and satisfaction in the simple pleasures—tending to her garden and knitting, which allowed her to unwind.

Marilyn is survived by her husband of nearly 52 years, Dan; daughters, Roberta (Darryl Chew) Bongers and Nicole Bongers; grandchildren, Julien Feist, Jane Feist, and Connor Chew; siblings, Carmen (James) Schablitsky, John (Teresa) Miller, Tom (Linda) Miller, Gordy (Becky) Miller, and James (Kay) Miller; sister-in-law, Sheryl Miller; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Miller.
