Mary Jeanette Hammond

Mary Jeanette Hammond, age 82, of Faribault, MN, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Allina Health Medical Center Faribault.

Mary Jeanette, daughter of Vincent and Marie (Freeman) LaCanne was born May 30, 1944, in Faribault at District #1 Hospital. Jeanette was one of 12 children born to Vincent and Marie. Jeanette was raised on the family farm 6 miles west of Faribault, attended District #83 (one room schoolhouse, no running water, no indoor bathrooms) grades 1 through 8 then going on to Bethlehem Academy graduating in 1962. She married her high school sweetheart, Ron Hammond July 25, 1964 (Sacred Heart Church) having over 60 years of love and happiness. Jeanette worked at the Paradise and Village theater throughout her high school years. After high school, Jeanette was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 36 years holding titles of cord board operator, Adm. Clerk, Sr. Clerk, Service Rep., Service Specialist, Acct. Consultant, Acct. Manager in the communities of Faribault, Owatonna, and downtown Minneapolis. During those years she also served as Mayor 1993-1996, council member 1997-1999. She found this work deeply fulfilling as she came to know and work with the members of the community.

Her family was her pride and joy! She cherished frequent family gatherings, Holidays together, creating lasting memories and so many moments of laughter. In retirement, Jeanette enjoyed her volunteer time, flipping houses, cruises, casino trips and being with people.

Jeanette was deeply committed to serving our community, including through her countless efforts with the Faribault American Legion Auxiliary Unit #43, Faribault Heritage Days, Kiwanis Club and Poppy Fundraising for the veterans. Her devotion to this cause was evident though her record setting sales.

She is survived by her husband Ron; by her children, Lori Hammond, Michelle (Chuck) Jones, Yvette Hammond (Lee Flandrich) and Ann (Jon) Dietman; by seven grandchildren, Spencer (Allie) Johnson, Callie Johnson, Alex Tillery, Avery Tillery, Cameron Tillery, Luke Dietman (fiancé Skylar Newman) and Lauren Dietman; by her siblings, Rose Pirkl, Sheila (Steve) Castle, Dan (Jean) LaCanne, Terry (Barb) LaCanne, Rob (Joanne) LaCanne, Harold (Diane) LaCanne; sister-in-law, Irene LaCanne; brothers-in-law, Frances Coughlin and Larry Scherger and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Vincent LaCanne Jr., infant sister, Sandra LaCanne, sisters, Marilyn Beaupre, Helen Coughlin and Bette Scherger and brother-in-law, Vic Pirkl.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Faribault, with Fr. Alex Marquette officiating. Interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery, Faribault.

Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday for one hour prior to services.
